Case Study:

P.D. Browne South, a machine tools and manufacturing systems distributor.  We evaluated their site, and implemented changes across the board. 

The site was presented in frames, using a java applet for navigation with no alternative means for accessing the site. Site organization was confusing with buttons labeled "more info", "sales", "service", "history" etc.

Once inside the site, large background graphics detract from the site's message and focus. Design elements were not complementary, lacking a coherent theme. The site lacked a clear understanding of exactly what products the company represents.  Page names are cryptic "page2.html" instead of utilizing descriptive names that assist in search engine recognition.

The previous site's product area led to a searchable area. No other information was provided. Visitor's were expected to guess which manufacturer's machines were available.

Our Recommendations and what we did to improve the site:

Navigation within the site is provided by tab-like buttons across the top of each page, with text counterparts located at the end of each page.  No java required, interactivity on-mouseover provided by Javascript - a feature widely supported and one that won't leave a vistitor stranded with no link to click.

The new product area features a main page that allows visitor's to see at a glance what is available. Listed by broad category (machine type) with bullets listing each manufacturer, sub-pages in this section give further information along with links and images. Searchable specifications are available via the Specifications tab at the top of the page or by clicking  a link from within the product area.
