Quite a few people want to know if The

a web site design package... You've seen them advertised everywhere,
a web site design package that gives you a set number of pages,
links and graphics for $499 or so.
Before you choose between a web
site design package or a web site custom designed for your
business, here are a few things to consider:

Package deal-type web sites are usually cookie-cutter in
design, yours and dozens of other sites look the same. While
all web sites have similar elements, these package deal web
sites are literally cut from the same cloth.

Package deal-type web sites can be inflexible. You get pages
your company may not need or may not apply to your business
or situation - and you may not get pages that are vital to
your company's operation. One size doesn't fit all in the
case of web sites.

Package deal-type web sites may not be ready for marketing.
Marketing readiness includes attention to the content of the
site, keywords in various areas of the site, links and the
use of other techniques. Marketing readiness gives your site
the edge over your competition that a fill in the blank package
deal site doesn't deliver.
Many promise to submit your site to the top 20
- but don't tell you that the top sites, in most cases charge
fees (in some cases hundreds of dollars) for review and inclusion
and that the free submittal some do offer are only given to
non-profits or educational type organizations. Submission
does not mean your site will be included, this is true
even more so of the free submission. It really is a case of
getting what you paid for.

Domain registration - do you already have your domain registered,
or is it a part of the package? If it is a part of the package
- whose name goes under Registrant - is it your company's
name or the design company's name? Your company should be
listed as registrant of your domain. Anything less and you
don't "own" your domain and cannot control it.

How are updates to your web site processed? Web sites need
regular updates, these aren't included in the original fee.
What options are available to your for making updates and/or
changes to your web site? Is it DIY (do-it-yourself) or can
you call and talk with the person who put your site together
to go over the changes that are required? What is the turn
around time for basic updates? Most package deal-type web
sites don't offer personalized service.
